Have I known you long enough to love you?
Have I loved you long enough to know you?
my hands are dry and worn from washing dishes
and your clothes in the sink
(I always make the water too hot)
You tip-toed behind me with wonderful intentions,
wrapped your little boy arms around me
and whispered
"Good morning, good morning, good morning, good morning."
"Why so many 'good mornings?' I asked,
holding a china bowl with ships on the side,
and you so deftly replied,
"So when I am gone for the next three days, I will have still said good morning."
And when you make me dinner while I pretend to help,
my hands will dance across your shoulders like small mice
enjoying a waltz, and
I will cherish the investment you have made on our future.
Three more days of good mornings.
