Exalt

produce produce produce
in constant creation
I am shedding my skin
I was going to give it to you
but you hid in the vignette of my life
gasping and whispering
you are at a distance
and on a schedule
and you pencil me in

I produce and produce and produce
today it's good and tomorrow it's not
like the carcass of a bee
it's dead on my floor in the morning
why did it mean so much?

and who was I last night
when I buried my face in your hand
and inhaled for hours in blind silence
am I still that spaniel in the sun?

and who was I when I wrote your eyes
into prose
who were you when you grinned
in my photograph
who was I when I curled a vine around
my strong heart
and who were you when you buried the
letters I wrote
who was I when I burned my throat on
the tea that litters my days

and I consumed your weakness
and lo, I am hungry
I knew not strength while
devouring your cool collective dozing

create create create
I bore you from my heart, always
the purest forms of me I send out
express, examine, exhume, exalt.
