Little Moon Girl

She knew not of the forest
before she looked in his eyes
wrapped herself in silks and scarves
of many thread count
and ran into the dark backyard
of her childhood
whooping and hollering into the night

She called herself a witch and
buried tobacco beneath cedar trees
she lit candles and put lavender
beneath her pillow
she bathed in oils of citrus and ylang ylang
she flitted and fluttered and sang
Oh, how she did sing.

She kissed girls and refused boys
only because she knew she gave
them pieces of herself too easily
In little woven bags, tied with string
Little slices of the moon of her heart

Little blue moon girl,
as strong as the willow
as unshifting as the sea
Eyes wide open, she cries at certain songs
She still does

And she has never done anything
but love you
Beat her drum and play her wooden flute
She's got a box full of feathers
She says she waits for the man who'll
she'll give them to

"Why would he need your feathers?"
and she would reply
"I imagine his shoulders will be cold."

Dance for me little moon girl
You've spent your days dreaming
It's time to see the miracle of you
How you dance into hearts and
make them beat again

She will spend the afternoon,
prostrate in the grass
feeling the breath of the earth in her bones
and calling the wind her home.
