urban symphony

i couldn't name that instrument
the one that echoed in the darkness
beneath the building i live
the hustle of the people
was too great to bear

clay underneath my fingernails
i felt you in it
deep in the heart of my sculpture
deep in the heart of the animal
that i gave life
above all else was you

the orchestra climbed the stairs with
small dainty hands
they would weave the tears right out of me
how magical they could be

pianos and guitars
harmonicas squeal through the halls
a chorus of voices singing of glory
and so much happiness
i cannot disregard the hopes
they sing of
i have the same dreams
i have so much faith in the future

my clay covered hands will clap to the
beating of the drums
so resemble the beat of your heart
you are here with me
tonight, you are here
and i've felt my voice dying within me
but today i'll let it out again
oh how i missed it so
and i'll wail, it's rusty this evening
but so was god when he made me
knobby knees and awkward teeth
eyes too big to not just see
but to remember every movement
and smile that you gave me

the symphony of all of us
enters the sky tonight
and it's for all of you
you who steal our hearts while we sleep
you who fluff our pillows and stroke our hair
a cacophony of bittersweet
an ambling but purposeful tease
we call to thee
